Our July Athlete of the Month is the one and only Brandon Hengesbach!
Brandon used to give Coach Nick a hard time about CrossFit until he finally got him to Tides and see what CrossFit is really all about. After a couple of drop-in sessions he was hooked. Ever since then he has been a regular athlete at CFT, going by the alias “Hag-en-bosh”, which was kindly given to him by Coach Brian.
Brandon always has a fun spirit and is great about cheering on his fellow athletes. While he may have been hesitant at first, he has truly embraced what CrossFit is all about and is a great member of the CFT Family!
Read below to find out some fun information about Brandon:
How long have you been at CFT? 2.5 years
What is your favorite part of CFT? The programming mix. I would never consciously select the workout routines myself but it forces me to work on all facets of CrossFit, not just the areas I am strong at or prefer.
What is your favorite WOD (so far)? Team Workouts, I appreciate going through the same pain with other people.
Favorite lift? Hang Clean
Least favorite lift? Double Unders!
What is your proudest moment so far? Finishing Murph Year 1 after rolling my ankle coming off the pull-up bar towards the end of Cindy.
How have you seen yourself change mentally and physically since starting CFT?Mentally I am much more aware of my capacity during a workout and have improved on slowing myself down early but also pushing myself to finish. Physically, I am in better cardiovascular shape then I have been in 8 years.
What advice would you give to someone who is new to CrossFit? Stick it out. The first 3 months will be mentally and physically fatiguing and at times discouraging because you aren’t able to do RX workouts. However, you will see progress in yourself you didn’t know existed.
If you could design your perfect WOD what would it be?
Team Workout: Ladder cleans or clusters, rowing and box jumps
What is the one workout accessory you cannot live without? Stretching.
If you had to listen to one song on repeat for an entire day what would it be? September – Earth, Wind and Fire
Favorite cheat meal? La Perla
If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would you go? Italy
If you could have any career, what would it be? Something in Real Estate
If you had to be trapped on a deserted island, what is the one thing you would bring with you? An iPhone
What is your childhood nickname? Stingray, given to me by my 7th grade Science teacher. Had a slick haircut that I combed forward but spiked my bangs. He told me in jest that my hair reminded him of a Corvette
Personal goals: Strive to be a better father and husband
Professional goals: Secure an Expat assignment
Athletic goals: Beat Brian Campbell (Easy) ; Beat Nick Righetti (Hard)
Most important question – How do you really pronounce your last name?
Phonetically: “Hangs – ba”
~ Now we know… it is not Hag-en-bosh 😉
